Finding Daily Balance

In this time of great stress, finding daily balance is more important than ever. When patients need to re-center themselves and get unstuck, I often remind them of a few things:

First, people tend to become extra-serious and focused during times of great stress. But when we are too serious and focused, we ignore our inner playfulness, joy and passion.

Second, the impact of your body’s natural processes, including hormonal fluctuations of cortisol and adrenaline, during stress puts excess strain on our emotional health as they overload your system. This chemical dump can pre-dispose your physical body to illness and disease, which spill over into your mental well-being.

Third, daily balance requires strong relationships - with yourself, your friends, your family, your co-workers, and your support systems. Sometimes, you may need to prioritize yourself over your co-workers and family. Others, you may need to beef up your support system with a healthy walk outside with a friend - furry or otherwise. And there are some important times when you need to put balance on reaching out to professionals for emotional support.

Knowing when and how to create balance is a constant juggling act of remembering to play and be joyful, keep your body fit and healthy, and reach out to friends and family and beyond.
